Leaving GoDaddy's Microsoft 365: How to Move to Microsoft Without Losing Email

If your Microsoft 365 came bundled with your GoDaddy domain, you don't have to migrate a single mailbox. What changes is who controls the account, and the order you do it in decides whether anything breaks.

A lot of small businesses got Microsoft 365 (many still call it Office 365) the easy way: they registered a domain at GoDaddy, and email came with it. That works fine until you need something GoDaddy's version doesn't give you: full admin control, a plan GoDaddy doesn't sell, or an IT partner who can actually manage and secure the environment.

We recently helped a client make exactly this move, and the question we hear first is always the same: "Are we going to lose our email?" The answer is no, as long as you do it in the right order.

The most important thing to understand

GoDaddy's Microsoft 365 is a real Microsoft 365 tenant. Leaving GoDaddy doesn't mean copying your mailboxes somewhere new. It means changing who manages and bills the tenant you already have. GoDaddy describes it as moving "your Microsoft tenant away from GoDaddy," and your domain stays attached to it. Your email addresses, mailboxes, OneDrive files and Teams data stay where they are.

Why GoDaddy's Microsoft 365 is different

Sign-in runs through GoDaddy

GoDaddy sets up its Microsoft 365 tenants as "federated," which means your users sign in through GoDaddy's sign-in page instead of Microsoft's. While that federation is in place, the tenant can't be moved to a Microsoft partner or to direct Microsoft billing.

Admin access goes through GoDaddy's portal

The original admin account is redirected into GoDaddy's dashboard, so many owners have never had a full Microsoft 365 admin view of their own company.

You can only buy what GoDaddy resells

Licenses and add-ons come from GoDaddy's catalog. If you need a plan or security feature GoDaddy doesn't offer, you have to leave first.

Add-ons are GoDaddy products

Email security, backup and archiving bought from GoDaddy are GoDaddy services. They don't come with you, and some of them delete data when they are removed.

Two ways out

GoDaddy's supported move

GoDaddy now offers an official process through its support team.

  1. Confirm every email account is active and won't expire within five business days.
  2. Contact GoDaddy support, who open a move ticket.
  3. GoDaddy emails a temporary admin password to your GoDaddy account email, the next business day.
  4. Sign in at Microsoft, buy new licenses from Microsoft or a Microsoft partner, and assign them.
  5. Set new passwords for your users, then retire the GoDaddy plans.

Defederation by your IT partner

The route many Microsoft partners use, without waiting on a GoDaddy ticket.

  1. Take control of the tenant's built-in Microsoft admin account.
  2. Switch every domain in the tenant from "federated" to "managed" using Microsoft Graph PowerShell.
  3. Reset every user's password, since GoDaddy sign-in stops working.
  4. Bring licenses in through a Microsoft partner or buy direct, and assign them.
  5. Remove GoDaddy's admin access, fix DNS, then cancel the GoDaddy renewal.

Either way, it's the same tenant with the same mailboxes. GoDaddy is clear that the move is one way: once the tenant leaves, GoDaddy no longer has access to it and it can't be moved back.

The mistakes that cause outages or data loss

1

Signing up for Microsoft 365 separately

GoDaddy warns not to buy mailboxes from Microsoft or another reseller until the move is finished. Signing up on your own creates a brand-new, empty tenant, and GoDaddy says it can't be merged with your existing one. New licenses must be bought inside the tenant you already have.

2

Deleting mailboxes or cancelling GoDaddy first

GoDaddy says not to delete mailboxes before the move. Cancellation order matters too: if GoDaddy's admin access is still in place when the subscription is cancelled, GoDaddy's cleanup can delete users and remove your primary domain from the tenant. That is recoverable, but it means downtime.

3

Forgetting the email security MX record

If your GoDaddy plan included email security, your MX record points at GoDaddy's filtering service (Proofpoint), not Microsoft. Cancel that service without repointing your MX record and incoming mail stops. Leftover transport rules and connectors can also cause delivery problems afterwards.

4

Losing backups and archives

GoDaddy deletes email add-ons during the move. Its help article says Barracuda archives must be moved first, and backups from its Email Backup add-on can't be restored once removed. Export or migrate anything you are legally required to keep before you start.

5

Using a company address as your GoDaddy contact email

GoDaddy requires your GoDaddy account contact email to be on a domain outside the tenant being moved. That email is where the temporary admin password is sent, so if it is your company address you may not be able to receive it at the moment you need it.

6

Surprising users with a password change

Once sign-in moves from GoDaddy to Microsoft, users' existing passwords stop working. Office apps, Outlook and phones all prompt for the new password. Schedule the switch after hours and tell people what to expect.

7

Leaving GoDaddy's access behind

Remove GoDaddy's partner relationship and delegated admin roles from the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft partners have also found a leftover "Partner Center Web App" enterprise application in moved tenants, so we check for it and remove it.

How we handle a GoDaddy move

1

Inventory

Users, licenses, add-ons, DNS records, the GoDaddy account contact email, and anything that has to be retained for compliance.

2

Independent backup

A copy of mailboxes and OneDrive taken outside GoDaddy, before anything changes.

3

Plan the switch

An after-hours window, new passwords ready, and a short note to staff about what they will see.

4

Move and license

We take admin control, remove the federation, reset passwords and provision licenses inside the existing tenant, often upgrading to Business Premium at the same time.

5

Fix mail flow

We repoint MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC to Microsoft and remove leftover filtering rules and connectors.

6

Clean up

We remove GoDaddy's admin access and leftover applications, then cancel the GoDaddy renewal last.

After the move: turn on the security you're paying for

Getting out from under GoDaddy is only half the value. The other half is that you can finally manage the tenant properly. Many businesses use the move to step up to Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which adds the controls that stop most account takeovers:

Real admin accounts you control, separate from everyday user accounts.

Conditional Access policies that require MFA and block risky sign-ins.

Intune device management for company laptops and phones.

Defender for Office 365 protection against phishing and malicious attachments.

Backup you own, independent of any reseller.

Alerting on new inbox forwarding rules, unusual app consents and risky sign-ins.

Frequently asked questions

Will we lose any email or files when we leave GoDaddy?

No. Your mailboxes, OneDrive files and Teams data stay in the same Microsoft 365 tenant. What you lose are GoDaddy's own add-ons, such as email security, backup and archiving, so export or replace those before you start.

Is GoDaddy's Office 365 the same as Microsoft 365?

Yes. Microsoft renamed its Office 365 business plans to Microsoft 365 in 2020, and GoDaddy resells the same service with its own sign-in and billing on top. That is why you can leave GoDaddy without moving any mailboxes: the tenant underneath is a standard Microsoft tenant.

Do our email addresses change?

No. Your domain stays associated with the tenant, so every address stays the same.

Do we have to move our domain away from GoDaddy too?

No. Domain registration and Microsoft 365 are separate. You can keep the domain registered at GoDaddy and only move Microsoft 365. You will update DNS records so mail and sign-in point at Microsoft.

Can we move back to GoDaddy later?

GoDaddy says a tenant that has moved away can't be moved back.

Why do users have to reset their passwords?

With GoDaddy's setup, users sign in through GoDaddy. After the move they sign in directly with Microsoft, so each user needs a Microsoft password. Plan to hand out new passwords or set temporary ones that users change at first sign-in.

Stuck on GoDaddy's Microsoft 365?

We move the tenant, keep your mail flowing, clean up what GoDaddy leaves behind and lock the environment down. Your team keeps the same email addresses.
